Shri Swami Samarth is revered as the fourth incarnation of Dattatreya in the Hindu tradition, following Shri Padaballabh and Shri Narasimha Saraswati. His self-identification as "Narasimha Bhan" and his declaration of having emerged from the Kardali forest near Srisailam highlight his significant spiritual journey. It is widely accepted that he manifested in the Kardali forest and subsequently traveled across various regions, including Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra.

Shri Swami Samarth spent approximately 22 years in Akkalkot, Maharashtra, which ultimately transformed into a prominent pilgrimage site. Throughout his stay, he provided solace and guidance to numerous devotees, earning him recognition as Akkalkot Swami Maharaj. His activities date back to the 19th century, with historical accounts suggesting that on the day of Magh Shuddha 1 in the year 1459 CE, Shri Narasimha Saraswati established Dattatreya’s Nirguna Padukas in Gangapur. Following this event, he embarked on a pilgrimage to Shri Shailya, where he is believed to have attained salvation.

During his time in the Kardali forest, it is said that he engaged in rigorous penance for about 300 years. An intriguing anecdote from this period involves a woodcutter named Uddhav, who accidentally struck a beehive while chopping wood. This incident led to the emergence of a divine figure before Uddhav—a radiant manifestation of Swami Maharaj—marking a pivotal moment for his devotees.
